Greece prepared to turn to IMF

Greece is prepared to turn to the IMF if its EU neighbours fail to provide aid after it announced tough austerity measures, reports the FT. George Papandreou, Greek prime minister, will meet German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Friday before meeting Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris and then Barack Obama in Washington next week. His government is braced for more strikes after imposing a freeze on pensions on Wednesday and further cuts in public sector pay. Separately, the FT reports that news of the Greek measures helped calm forex markets and encourage broader risk appetite.
