When it comes to the actual financing (versus engineering) of Elon Musk’s Hyperloop, one of the first things you notice is wow, $6bn is really cheap for a new transportation technology. Though you’re not quite sure how.
Later you notice a line in Musk’s paper that the Hyperloop route — a 35-minute hop between Los Angeles to San Francisco — “must respect existing structures”. And then another: “Route: Follows I-5 to minimize land/right of way purchase costs.”
