Technical Help

Alphaville is designed to take advantage of the latest technologies available in modern web browsers, but still remain accessible and usable by everyone. If you are experiencing any problems using Alphaville, reviewing the following information may help you to diagnose the problem, otherwise please contact help@ft.com, and we will be pleased to assist you.

Blog features

Within the blog area of Alphaville, users with JavaScript enabled browsers will be able to expand posts within the index page without having to load the individual post on its own page. And when you write a comment on a post, it will be submitted and appear on the page without having to reload - just another small way that Alphaville helps you get around the site as quickly and easily as possible.

Markets live features

Markets live is our revolutionary real time markets commentary system, giving you information literally as it’s written, by some of the best analysts in the business. To see the chat as it happens you should have an up to date version of a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6 or higher), Apple Safari (version 2 or higher) or our recommended browser, Mozilla Firefox (1.5 or higher). If possible, Alphaville will establish a permanent, streaming connection between your computer and the server, allowing us to send you the messages literally as our journalists hit the enter key.

However, if you are using a slightly older browser or have anything sitting in between your computer and the internet which interrupts persistent connections (eg a proxy server), you may see Markets Live saying “Markets Live is updated every 2 seconds”. This means that we’ve not been able to create a permanent connection, and as a result your computer will periodically ask the Alphaville server for new messages. The time interval may get longer than two seconds if your connection is particularly slow or if messages are noit being posted very often.

As new messages appear on the page, we’ll auto-scroll your window to the bottom so you can see them. If you want to review the earlier parts of the chat without being sent back to the bottom every time a new message arrives, just click ‘Pause auto-scrolling’, and then click again when you want to resume.

Syndication

All categories of the Alphaville blog have news feeds, also known as RSS feeds, which you can use to keep up to date with Alphaville when not actually viewing the site. Anywhere you see the feed icon , you can drag it into your favourite news reader or aggregator to subscribe to the latest Alphaville headlines.

Standards compliance

Alphaville complies with XHTML 1.0 Transitional, CSS 2 and WAI level AA. Pages are designed for a 1024 pixel-wide screen, but will remain viewable on smaller screens, and may scroll horizontally if the available width of your screen is less than 1024 pixels.
