Introducing Mr Fred Goodwin, former Knights Bachelor…

Some will see this as further evidence that the Daily Mail runs the country….

The Forfeiture Committee has reached a decision.

Sir Fred Goodwin, disgraced, despised loathed, spat upon, former ceo of RBS, is losing his knighthood.

Here’s the FT’s George Parker and Patrick Jenkins on the matter:

Sir Fred Goodwin, the former boss of the Royal Bank of Scotland, is to be stripped of his knighthood, in a move that David Cameron hopes will deflect ongoing public anger over high bonuses at the state-controlled bank. Sir Frederick Anderson Goodwin – or plain Mr Goodwin from now on – was given his honour for “services to banking” in June 2004, with the approval of Gordon Brown, then chancellor of the exchequer.

“Friends” of Mr Goodwin say he will not be responding in any way publicly to the move. He’s in Scotland and he’s not saying anything.

Apparently, 34 recipients of British gongs have been stripped of their honours since 1995.  Here are some famous historical cases:

• Roger Casement, executed for treason in 1918

• Jack Lyons, a prominent businessman who made extensive charitable donations, butwas convicted of fraud in the late 1980s

• Anthony Blunt, who lost his knighthood in 1980 after he was revealed to be amember of the Philby-Burgess spying rings, although not charged or prosecuted..

• Terence Lewis forfeited his knighthood in 1993, following the findings of theFitzgerald inquiry into corruption in Queensland, Australia, and his subsequentconviction of corruption.

Should the list be longer?  Let us know below…
