Grand Viceroy Rehn

Silvio may be going but Italy remains front and centre of the Euromess.

On Tuesday evening, Olli Rehn, the EU’s economic and monetary commissioner presented Giulio Tremonti, Italy’s finance minister, with a detailed set of questions on the emergency austerity package passed in September that aims to eliminate the country’s budget deficit by 2013.

He wants answers and he wants them by Friday. Whether they will be satisfactory is another matter entirely.

The first question on Sustainable public finances, is something of a humdinger. Rehn wants to know what additional measures Italy will put in place if a deterioration  of the economic cycle leads to worsening of the deficit.
