The new head of global retail banking at Barclays has joined the backlash among bankers against the entry into banking of supermarkets and other consumer companies. Antony Jenkins said that new competitors may be underestimating the difficulties of breaking into the market. Jenkins, who last week replaced Frits Seegers in a surprise shake-up of Barclays’ management team, cast doubt on whether Tesco and Virgin had the right skills to run a bank. He spoke as a growing number of bank executives hit at the UK government’s plans to shake-up the industry.
