Flows into emerging market equity funds hit 18-month high

Funds dedicated to emerging market equities attracted some $4bn of investor cash during the week to June 03, according to data from fund tracker EPFR.

Michael Hartnett, chief global equity strategist at Merrill Lynch, described the move as “humongous”. He noted that inflows over the past 11 weeks – around $26bn worth – were greater than for the entire calendar year 2006.

Inflows were fairly evenly split between long-only mutual funds and ETFs, Merrill said.

On a country basis, the flows into Brazil were the second largest on record; in contrast, there were redemptions from Mexico, Turkey and South Africa.
