IMF warns on ‘longer’ UK recession

Britain’s recession could be deeper and longer than in most other parts of the world, according to draft IMF forecasts that cast a shadow over Gordon Brown’s election hopes for next year. The IMF will on Thursday tear up global economic forecasts it made just weeks ago and predict a more severe slump, including a deeper recession in the UK that continues beyond the June 2010 deadline for a UK general election. Draft IMF figures show UK output will fall 3.8% this year and a further 0.2% next year.
