UK tax authorities are investigating allegations about tax avoidance schemes operated by Barclays Bank, made by a whistleblower in the firm and apparently substantiated by leaked documents, reports The Guardian. The moves came as the UK government announced steps to discourage tax avoidance by Britain’s banks. But, reports the FT, plans announced by chancellor Alistair Darling for a voluntary code of conduct for banks were denounced as “limp-wristed” by opposition politicians.
