Funny things happen when fashion meets financial crisis.
To wit, meet Lithuanian model Auguste Abeliunaite. She walked the Jil Sander runway in Milan on Friday with tears streaming down her face — the only model to do so (else we would think it part of the show). She’s since been lauded as a hero of these hard-up economic times, it seems.
A commentator quoted in the Wall Street Journal’s Heard on the Runway site put it thusly:
One blogger, a classically trained musician who calls herself Opera Chic (a double entendre, because she likes writing about the opera and fashion) emailed Heard on the Runway to say that the crying incident was “a transcendent moment.” Ms. Abeliunaite is “the icon of fashion in this difficult year of 2009: there’s an economic crisis, you keep your chin up and go ahead, walk down that runway.”
Strange times make for strange icons we guess.
