Bank nationalizations would “surprise” FDIC

 Jan. 15 (Bloomberg) — Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Shiela  Bair today said he would be “very surprised” if U.S. banks were  nationalized.

“I’d be very surprised that happened,” Bair told reporters in answer to a question about U.S. actions to take over banks. Bair appeared in New  York City.

NEW YORK, Jan 15 (Reuters) – Federal Deposit Insurance Corp chair Sheila Bair said on Thursday that it would be a big surprise to the U.S. bank regulator if a U.S. bank were to be nationalized. Asked by reporters whether the FDIC anticipated nationalizing any large U.S. banks, Bair said: “I can’t comment. I’d be very surprised if that happened.”

Bair was speaking to reporters before a luncheon of the RainbowPUSH coalition in New York.
