Barack Obama is on Friday expected to name Mary Schapiro, head of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the US securities industry’s self-regulatory body, as chair of the SEC. The decision to appoint Schapiro, 53 comes amid escalating criticism of the SEC for its role in the financial crisis – particularly after the agency’s admission this week of failures in response to allegations as far back as 1999 of wrongdoing by New York broker Bernard Madoff.
