After a triple whammy of Paulson, Bernanke and Meredith Whitney, US equity markets closed sharply lower on Monday:

- Dow down 679.95 or 7.70 per cent to 8,149.09
- Nasdaq down 137.50 or 8.95 per cent to 1,398.07
- S&P 500 down 80.05 or 8.93 per cent to 816.19

An inauspicious start to the month.
