UK chancellor Alistair Darling is pressing banks to change their voluntary code on lending to small businesses after admitting yesterday that the government was powerless to dictate the amounts or terms the banks offered the sector. Ministers have been in secret talks with lenders to rewrite the code, ensuring small businesses are given reasonable notice before loans and overdrafts are axed.
