My dear Jamie,

Thanks for your note.

As it happens, we do currently have one position to fill and further openings may well become available shortly. But interest has already been keen and we’ve decided to rule off on applications at the close of play on Monday.

I was minded to joke that you are going to get a sore letter-writing hand, personally finding jobs for the 5k BS-ers that didn’t fit with the Grand Plan. But then I noticed your signature was pre-printed!

You should be careful with that. Some people might construe it as naff PR. Others might point out that no one lifted such a finger when they were paying the personal price for the creation of the now mighty JP Morgan Chase Manhattan Bank One Chemical Texas Commerce Sears Canada Manufacturers Hanover Robert Fleming Bear Stearns - or whatever you are called this week.

Hi to Judith, etc

Paul
