The European Commission on Monday opened its first new anti-trust campaign against Microsoft since the late 1990s, in the process challenging parts of the company’s core technology strategy. The case was prompted by complaints filed over the past two years by Microsoft’s competitors against a range of its software, including its internet browser and email tools. The Commission said its investigation would focus on allegations that a range of products have been “unlawfully tied to sales of Microsoft’s dominant operating system”. News of the probe comes nearly four months after Microsoft lost a landmark appeal in Europe against the Commission’s last case against it.
