Need to downsize? Move to New York

Just look how cheaply Wall Street’s higher-ups are now housing themselves. Former Citi chief executive Sandy Weill has had to shell out a paltry $42.4m for a penthouse in what the NYT’s Dealbook describes as Manhattan’s “it” building - 15 Central Park West, the uber-luxurious new condominium building set to open this autumn.

He and his wife Joan can look forward to having Sting and Denzel Washington as neighbours, but then Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman and Daniel Och of Och-Ziff are also moving in, according to reports.

And then there’s the master of poison pen letters, hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, who Sandy probably wouldn’t want to get caught in the lift with. Loeb paid $45m back in 2005 for a penthouse in the building - so it looks as though he’s managed to bring his own neighbourhood down. In dollar terms at least.

But look. What’s 40-odd-mil for an “it-flat”?

In London, the four penthouses at the top of the One Hyde Park development (completion: 2010) carry rumoured price tags of $170m.

Each.

According to The Telegraph, the flats could feature bullet proof windows, specially purified air and panic rooms, “with a security system believed to have been developed after consultation with the SAS.”

And yes, the dollar really is that weak.

So, four of these?
