The Weekender

This week on FT Alphaville,

- Markets, markets, markets

- They were up, then down. Hot, hot China hit a record regardless. Globally the falls continued. Down again in Asia. And again.

- Our old friend Mrs Watanabe led the charge for the door of the yen carry trade. And Japan took a beating on Friday – blame it on the foreigners – and Obon.

- Then the Fed got involved.

- The quants were having a shocker and the rumours were flying. Though by the end of the week, rumour saturation had hit – as well as overall nausea.

- With quantocide all around, Goldman led a rescue mission. Sorry – that’s a NOT-rescue mission. And thus we all learned to speak ‘hedge fund’ and Basis Capital pledged ‘potential claims against financiers.’

- Is this 1998 all over again? Not if you consider the emerging markets.

- And we started the search for humour amid the wreckage…keep it coming.

- Don’t forget. Markets Live, FT Alphaville’s daily markets discussion forum, returns on Monday at 11am, London time. We’re sure you’ll have plenty of questions….
