Wolfe: “The end of capitalism as we know it”

We’re not the only ones feeling slightly unwell as Blackstone gets away on the public markets. Our general nausea has now been worsened by vertigo - shares in the buyout group jumped 17.5 per cent to $36.45 after trading began in New York, with some early dealings going through at $45.

But shortly before shares in the private equity firm began trading, Tom Wolfe, author of Bonfire of the Vanities and more recently, magazine commentator on the world of hedge funds, appeared on the NYSE trading floor.

His verdict?

We “may be witnessing the end of capitalism as we know it.”
