Growing prospects that Rupert Murdoch will succeed in his $5.6bn bid for Dow Jones and its flagship title, the Wall Street Journal, are diminishing US media industry hopes that the Republican-controlled Federal Communications Commission will be able to reverse or weaken decades-old rules limiting ownership, which are under review by the media regulator. The FT’s Martin Wolf, meanwhile, warns in Monday ‘s FT of the consequences for the Journal’s editorial independence and reputation for balanced financial reporting if Mr Murdoch succeeds in his bid.
