Plea to end foreign worker ‘addiction’

Britain’s immigration minister has urged companies to wean themselves off their “addiction” to hiring foreign workers, insisting that his curbs on immigrants were not preventing skilled employees coming to the UK. In an interview with the FT, Damian Green said that some industries such as the restaurant business may have to train more British workers as a result of Home Office policy changes, but denied corporate criticisms that Britain is seen as “not open for business”. Business organisations have complained that a Conservative pledge to cut net migration to the “tens of thousands” by 2015 and prioritise the local workforce is sending a negative message to skilled workers abroad.
